Oooohhhh. Everything is better with bitters. I shall have to try this version.
I remember walking into the one bar and hearing "Say Hello to the pansies!!" yelled at us and having red-headed sluts.
Wait - we had us? (Ba dum BUM.) Ah, Columbus Cafe, back in the day....

What's funny is that the book's author mentioned that with both recipes, the Havana bartenders would have to alter it for the Americans by using gin instead of rum.

that sounds right.
The first time I ever heard of bitters was at a bar up on Washington Island in Door County, WI. The big thing there was to drink a shot of bitters followed by a beer chaser, and then they gave you a card to celebrate your achievement that you then "signed" by putting your thumb in the shotglass and putting your thumbprint on the card with the bitters as the ink.
Hi Perkins. I'll be coming into SF this weekend. My plane gets in Saturday evening and I'll leave on Wednesday afternoon.
a shot of bitters? ew. I was given a dash of bitters in club soda for a tummyache when I was a kid.

Rum? Gin? Bitters? Booze?

AWESOME. I must find this place. (Fernet is basically bitters, which is part of the reason I love it so.)
