Sins of the Fathers
In the railroad yards, men settled their differences with fists and insults. They worked with a wrench in one fist and a cigarette in the other, the smoke lost in the miasma of coal dust and then diesel fumes. The grandfather treated his sons with the same rough disciple, and one day insults between two sons turned to shoving, a head hitting a table corner, and death. In their horror at his father’s death, the family indulged his son. He grew up to look for easy answers and quick money and to fall to the same tumor that gnawed his grandfather’s chest.
