It's weird. Early in the first season the fact that Lance had once been Harry Dresden would occasionally take me out of the show. Now, I completely missed the connection, even though I even thought to myself during the episode that Lance seemed surprisingly comfortable with trappings of the spell.

When I was sick a couple of weeks ago, I decided it was time to check out the Dresden Files show (thank you, Hulu). I could only watch about 15 minutes of the episode. I like Paul Blackthorne a lot, but it was just...not the world I envisioned when reading the books. And the way Bob was portrayed was not remotely close to what I envisioned.

Yeah, Blackthorne was one of the few bright spots on the show. They threw out a lot of the mythology that make the books great in favor of generic Hollywood monsters. Also, the idea that TV!Harry advertises himself as a wizard but then constantly tries to tell people that the supernatural doesn't really exist was really stupid. (I also hated the hockey stick and drumstick in place of his staff and blasting rod.)

TV!Bob I actually liked a lot. He wasn't much like book! Bob, but I loved Terrence Mann's performance and thought it was an excellent way of getting around how cheesy a talking skull would look on a TV budget.

I know the TV rights have reverted back to Jim Butcher, so hopefully someone like HBO will pick them up and make a true-to-the-books show at some point.

ETA: Although I just realized that HBO would likely want to do the opening murder scene in all its gory detail, which I have no desire to see, so maybe someone else would be better.

The...what now? Clearly I didn't even get that far. That's really a sad substitution.

I think it's probably better if you watch the TV show before reading the books. I did it in that order, and I liked the TV series because I didn't have any expectations from the books.

I could never get into the books, but I enjoyed the TV show well enough.

I watched the show before reading any of the books, and really enjoyed it because I had no expectations. I thought the hockey stick was a great idea for a staff. I still imagine Harry with it when I read the books.

While I enjoy the books, the later ones started to bother me because each one is written where Harry has to top whatever the big spell was from the previous book, so now he's sorta become this powerful god-like figure, grubby though he still is.

The reason given was they were "less conspicuous." Because Harry is all about the subtlety, you know. /sarcasm. (Plus, maybe random guys walking down the street with hockey sticks but no other gear in Canada, where they shot the show, is unremarkable, but it's still out of place in Chicago.)

I haven't read it yet, but Jim just released the first book in his new Steampunk series. The next DF book is currently being written.

Oh, COME ON. John Constantine just happened to be on Lian Yu?

To be fair, John is pretty high on the list of DC characters likely to show up out of nowhere for some inexplicable reason. (Really, the Phantom Stranger is about the only one who's got him beat.) It's not like Olly stumbling across Barry Allen or Jim Gordon chilling on Assassin Island.
