I like that actor just fine...because of Primeval...but holy cow that made me mad. So, the creepy, stalky rapist wins? All over the place. The doctor lies for him and the mayor lies with him. Feh.

I do like the new doctor, but I'm just as, if not more disappointed with the writing so far. The first half of tonight's episode had me smiling but the last half seemed less coherent.
I like the Danny character and am curious which direction that will go, though I am a bit wary of the potential for amped up romance. I actually love romance as entertainment, but don't think Doctor Who really needs it. There is so much more going on in the Universe to focus on!

I can actually buy that as a post-Time War thing.
I suppose there are technicalities for all of them. The Brigadier never really lived in the Tardis, and only traveled in it occasionally. Ben was an able seaman and might have corrected anyone who called him a soldier. Jamie was a piper. But piping was important to keeping time and giving orders during battles (like drummers). So that would have been the hardest to get around. He might have challenged to a duel anyone who got too insistent about his not being a soldier.
As it seems new and specific to this Doctor, the no-soldier rule might be a reaction to recovered War Doctor memories, Gallifrey being hidden rather than destroyed notwithstanding. Pretty sure Centurians, however plastic, count as soldiers.
ETA: Anybody else suddenly have an urge to see this Doctor have a conversation with Jack Harkness?

That makes sense as a way to reconcile the no-soldier rule with the Doctor's past, but I still got the overall feeling that the no-soldier rule is primarily there to set up conflict in regards to Danny Pink coming on board the TARDIS. It works, but it still feels lazy and contrived.

Kinda seemed like a decision he had come to right then after the Dalek saw hatred at his core, to me.
I liked this episode. The Doctor is still figuring out who he is which I find interesting, and this is the best I've like Clara. Not into the Mr. Pink story, really, but maybe that will get better.
