Lorne: Snakes? Uh-huh. And they came out of your what? Okay. Okay, well, did they get up there themselves or is this part of a, you know, a thing? No, I'm not judging...Do we fight snakes? Angel: Only if they're giant. Or demons. Or giant demons. Are they giant demon snakes? Lorne: Well, unless this guy's 30 feet tall, I'm thinking they're of the garden variety.

Boxed Set, Vol. V: Just a Hint of Denial and a Dash of Retcon

A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.

Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.

Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.

This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.

Love is stronger than death and harder than sorrow. Those who practice it are fierce like the light of stars traveling eons to pierce the night.

As it seems new and specific to this Doctor, the no-soldier rule might be a reaction to recovered War Doctor memories, Gallifrey being hidden rather than destroyed notwithstanding. Pretty sure Centurians, however plastic, count as soldiers.

ETA: Anybody else suddenly have an urge to see this Doctor have a conversation with Jack Harkness?

Just me, then?

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

That makes sense as a way to reconcile the no-soldier rule with the Doctor's past, but I still got the overall feeling that the no-soldier rule is primarily there to set up conflict in regards to Danny Pink coming on board the TARDIS. It works, but it still feels lazy and contrived.

Jack would still flirt like whoa. Could be fun.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

I can actually buy that as a post-Time War thing.

Kinda seemed like a decision he had come to right then after the Dalek saw hatred at his core, to me.

I liked this episode. The Doctor is still figuring out who he is which I find interesting, and this is the best I've like Clara. Not into the Mr. Pink story, really, but maybe that will get better.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Surely there's a real (and not just metaphorical) connection between Mr. Pink & Ms. Blue?

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

I wondered that myself, Jon.

You were a wrong baby who grew up wrong. The wrong kind of wrong. It's better you hear it from a friend.

Ben was an able seaman and might have corrected anyone who called him a soldier.

True, but still military. I'm assuming that's the basis of the Doctor's objection.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

It definitely struck me as a reaction to the Time War, and having resurfaced memories of the War Doctor.

So, Defiance. I'm still a few eps from the season finale, but is the Casti-face thing ever addressed in a satisfactory manner that indicates the writers have at least heard of blackface and its associated history here in the real world? Because in the first ep where it came up, we had Alak at least paying lip service to the idea that dressing up as another race/species was creepy and offensive, but then in the very next episode he was apologizing and had apparently come around to the idea that actually wearing face-paint and a wig to look like another race/species was a great way to learn about their culture and NO NO NO. I mean, what the fuck, show?

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I didn't think it was like blackface, rather more like the very prevalent skin bleaching and hair straightening that goes on across India, Africa, the Caribbean and South America.

When you're painting up the ladder the vibes are very different.

For my birthday I'm getting some Doctor Who DVDs. The set will include the Face of Evil, the Hand of Fear and the Brain of Morbius. I'm sensing a pattern here. Alas, I have yet to acquire the Head of Vecna.
