I watched Awake tonight. It's interesting enough that I will probably watch it again, especially since I really like several of the actors in it. It is asking a lot of the audience with essentially two casts and two crimes each week.

see, after watching the pilot it seemed clear to me that this show was supposed to be a scifi show and go the "different realities" way. I kind of wish that this was what the show was going to do.

I really would like it to go in this direction as well, but I get the feeling that it is going to turn into a simple procedural with the two realities stuff falling into the background. I hope I'm wrong.

I also watched the pilot for Touch which aired a while back and has been sitting on my DVR forever. It's really heavy handed, but I might watch another episode or two to see if it gets any better. I did laugh at the Heroes reference.

Yes, I knew that, but the reference still amused me.

I thought Awake was great, and rather beautiful in its picture of grief, although I hope it's not just a super depressing grievingfest. I liked that they shot both realities differently and that both could be "real." The dual-procedural was neat, but they can't just do the same thing every week (although they probably will for the first few episodes because America loves procedurals and so that it gives new viewers an in).

I hope to see more of what Laura Allen can bring to the role after her great work in Terriers. And what the fuck, that was Wilmer Valederrama?

I don't really understand what the sleeping issue is. Obviously, he sleeps. That's when he dreams. He just doesn't perceive it, like Liese said. The all-nighter issue is something to consider, though. What happens when his sleep cycle gets wonky?

I mean, it's not like he goes to sleep for 12 hours--he lies down for sleep at night and seems to open his eyes and start living then...there are mechanics I want the nitty gritty of, even without an explanation, but I suspect most of America doesn't care, and part of their mainstream success hinges on them not dwelling on those details.

Because...that's the whole premise of the show. Hell, he even has the line about either seeing the 611 in a dream or being in a dream at the moment.

The premise of the show, in my reading, is two existences of unknown validity. You're saying it's impossible, by definition, that they're both real?

I don't consider him a reliable narrator. He's obviously not fully informed as to what's going on.

Right now, they could both be equally valid reality--divergent timelines; or they could both be creations of his mind brought on by some condition mental or physical; or one could be a figment of some sort and the other real--I don't see where it's definite that it's the last one.

If one of them is a dream, it's the most boring and disappointing explanation possible. I'd hate that explanation, and I'd feel like it was a retroactive waste of time. And I rarely say that about finding out a given scenario wasn't actually real.
