'War Stories'

Boxed Set, Vol. V: Just a Hint of Denial and a Dash of Retcon

A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.

Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.

Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.

This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.

All sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story. Tell me a story.

Brad Dourif! I can't believe they got freaking Wormtongue for only two scenes.

Isn't he a Vancouver local? I know he was on Millennium and X-Files.

I wasn't surprised by Olivia's death (from the preview I knew there was a funeral and a broken Peter), but the way they did it was pretty shocking. I may have been most surprised at how un-redeemable Walternate had become. Well, that, the disappearing Peter, and the Observers at the end. How many of them were there, anyway?

So... if Walter sent the machine and the original First People transcript back in time... does that mean Walter is Rambaldi?

"And that's why God Almighty gave us fire insurance and the public defender".

Very latish to DW:

I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a DW episode so much. I watched it twice, as it was so good.

And dang, so many questions! And theories!

But first...

So Amy has Schrödinger's pregnancy? And she's the mother of a Time Lord?

Here's what I'm kindda hoping for: with all of the "let's pick up every last detail from every DW season!" thing going on there (oh, how they scared me with many Amy's death!), I'm wishing that somehow, just somehow, it's the Doctor's daughter. You know, from the episode where they cloned him in the land of everlasting 4 day war.

the Silence

You have no idea how irritating it is to keep hearing again and again Cylons instead of Silence. I was first confused, then disappointed from the BSG very odd ripoff, and then it took me about 15 minutes to remember the Silence thing.

River

Is fantastic. And awesome. I'll get back to her later, but I just needed to say that the flirting scene with the doctor might have been replayed few times. Ahem. And it's still hot. Reminds me of the good ol'days of me and omnis over at Bitches.

Amy and Canton had a nice Mulder and Scully vibe in the nursing home

I watched exactly 5 minutes of x-files and thought the same.

Rory and Amy, Doctor and River

Are designed to break my heart. The dynamics of both of the couples is similar (very strong and equal-yet-different characters. Well, maybe River is a bit better than the Doctor. At least, I like her better), but it's their positions that makes them so different.

I'm worried that the woman at the door is telling the truth, and it's another season in which Pond is dreaming/constructing. It's brilliant in theory, but it's not Dr. Who, in a way, you know? Unless Moffat is there to completely change the series, which is OK, I can roll with it for he is a brilliant storyteller.

There's something deep here, which I have no time to think of. It's how Moffat plays with forgetting and remembering. Remember Donna, and how she lost her memory was very tragic and heartbreaking? Here, with Pond, it's how a woman actively losing and gaining memory is constructing the world. And there's River, how has to place herself in time every time she meets the Doctor, and remember what not to tell him - or else, spoilers in his timeline. And the Silence. And the Doctor himself.

But again, no time, dammit. Wonderful ep. Wonderful River.

All is well that ends in pizza.

When they had a viking funeral, I couldn't help thinking about the Doctor Who season opener. Two Sci-fi future deaths in a row set afire and shoved out into the water.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Joshua, lose that sweater. It's almost as heinous as alternaMisha's.

"Cry havoc and let slip the boobs of war!" -- Miracleman

I wasn't surprised by Olivia's death (from the preview I knew there was a funeral and a broken Peter), but the way they did it was pretty shocking.

I actually liked it--no machinations, silly traps, or tricks. Just straight up, bullet through the head. You have to appreciate the simplicity.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

Joshua, lose that sweater. It's almost as heinous as alternaMisha's.

It made me think of BBC!Watson with his cuddly sweaters.

I may spend this summer catching up on Fringe and Doctor Who.

Love is stronger than death and harder than sorrow. Those who practice it are fierce like the light of stars traveling eons to pierce the night.

Well, maybe River is a bit better than the Doctor. At least, I like her better

River is human. The Doctor isn't. In many ways he can, even should, be above or outside our likes and dislikes. We can love him or hate him, but he isn't us. River as a member of our species can be liked (or not, but I'm having a hard time thinking of anyone who doesn't, except maybe her prison guards and they don't count here), because she is familiar and we can comprehend her. The Doctor does not always make sense. River Song, even when she is not making sense, she is not making sense in ways that make sense to us. If that makes any sense to you.

Yeah, I'm shutting up now.

(Folks who generally like the show probably shouldn't browse around there much, but I thought this was funny enough to share.)

I've got to say that I agree with a lot of what that guy has to say about Moffat's version of DW. I didn't like this two-parter and it's reminding me of how I felt last season when the first few episodes were written by Steven Moffat. Nothing makes sense - there's a lot of plot trickery that serves absolutely no purpose. The Doctor orchestrates an almost genocidal action against the Silence (while mind-altering the entire human race to kill another species). I love the Doctor more than almost any other fictional character, but I actively dislike him in Moffat's version when he's being flip about implanting subliminal 'kill' messages into people. It's a gross idea.

The only stuff I enjoyed was the River/Doctor relationship and the acting from the four main leads and Mark Sheppard.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Well, that was OK.
