I agree with Debet. In at least one classic series, the Time Lords bargained with the Master, letting him have extra regenerations past his twelve if he does them a favor. (It may have even been "The Deadly Assassin" series mentioned in the article).
'The Train Job'
Boxed Set, Vol. V: Just a Hint of Denial and a Dash of Retcon
A topic for the discussion of Doctor Who, Arrow, and The Flash. Beware possible invasions of iZombie, Sleepy Hollow, or pretty much any other "genre" (read: sci fi, superhero, or fantasy) show that captures our fancy. Expect adult content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.
Marvel superheroes are discussed over at the MCU thread.
Whitefont all unaired in the U.S. ep discussion, identifying it as such, and including the show and ep title in blackfont.
Blackfont is allowed after the show has aired on the east coast.
This is NOT a general TV discussion thread.
Since we're talking about the Doctor....
In the Season 4 two-part episode "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead", River Song tells the Doctor his name in order to gain his trust. Later he tells here there is only one time he could tell anyone his name.
I don't think any other of the new episodes mention this. Is this mentioned in any of the classic episodes?
No.
In the Fourth Doctor serial "The Armageddon Factor", the Doctor runs into a former class mate of his named Drax. Drax refers to the Doctor several times as "Thete", to which the Doctor replies "It's the Doctor." "Thete" is then revealed to be short for Theta Sigma, the Doctor's nickname at Prydon Academy on Gallifrey, as also referenced in "The Happiness Patrol" and "The Pandorica Opens".
But that's not his real name either.
I don't think Witwer is conventionally pretty. I think he makes an interesting Mitchell.
So, any guesses as to who or what River Song is?

I think she's The Doctor's future wife, and I also think that the mystery "great man" she killed is The Doctor. Murder? Maybe. Divorce? Never.
I think she's The Doctor's future wife, and I also think that the mystery "great man" she killed is The Doctor.
Maybe. The only problem with those theories is they're too obvious (because for some reason I'm thinking they'll go for something unexpected).
Also, at the end of The Big Bang, River tells the Doctor he'll see her again soon, and then says, "I'm sorry, but that's when everything changes." The "I'm sorry" bit makes me think it'll be something less happy than marrriage....
The Sarah Jane Adventures starts up again today.
And the series has some interesting news for Who fans:
I think I would have rather they just waited until the situation came up and have the doctor say, "Oops! Guess I was wrong.
Maybe. The only problem with those theories is they're too obvious (because for some reason I'm thinking they'll go for something unexpected).
I think they will too.
But I can see a marriage ceremony being the one time a Time Lord would reveal his real name.
Let's be careful with the blackfont of the linked information.
