Again, Mal's whole "Simon and River are part of my crew, and my crew mean everything to me" mentality is jarring when considered against his perspective in the movie. I wish that transition had been done a little more smoothly.

Agreed. Movie transition wasn't ideal. But on the good side, we got to see it on the big screen.
Agreed Laga. In their world their main persuit is to keep flying. Finally Mal sees one thing bigger than them scraping by that he can do something about.

It's just that at the beginning of the movie he's practically hostile towards Simon. And while the two of them have never been best buds, that hostile relationship felt really, really wrong.
