You know, one of the reasons that was given for teh meagre availability of women's hiking clothing was that women would just buy men's stuff regardless of label. I think I hope that there was some similar reasoning going on in those "occupational" costumes. Reduces the rage a little.
Natter 54: Right here, dammit.

From the comments thread on Feministe -- I love this so, so very much, and I'm crushed that I didn't think of it:
I’m wearing pajama bottoms, an old t-shirt, slippers and a robe, and I’m carrying around a baby doll. I’ve got burp cloths and baby wipes coming out of my pockets. I’ve got big black circles under my eyes. I’m a Mombie.
Yeah, it does kind of look like the boys' costumes are mostly unisex, but the girls' are skirted. If you were a costume maker, why make a girls' and boys' version when they haven't developed yet?
To me its not the showing of skin, its the lameness of costume.
You can dress as a cop.
You can add some sort of visual commentary and dress as "police brutality"
But if you just put on a short tight dress with a badge and a hat you're not dressed as something, you just look hot in a goofy way. And I suppose that once that had its own cleverness, but now its just a default. And you're not dressed as anything.
Surely there could be clever exceptions... "sexy burqua" could be awesome. And you can dress as something sexy and have it be a costume. But Sexy Nurse, Sexy Astronaut, Sexy Sexworker is just sort of tired.

Because girls wear pink, silly.
But why the rash of costumes for girls that are sexy/slutty? especially sized for those who haven't developed yet?

In the UK M&S came out with a range of "sexy underwear" products -- for kids, aged 6. They got withdrawn.
Oh, wait, I do feel better about that page of costumes, realizing that that's what comes up when you search for "Girls Costumes." The boy page includes some other ridiculous stuff, but not as much: [link]
Eeeewwww. For God's sake, let the kids be kids!
ETA: This was in response to Kevin's underwear post.
Engineer costume on that page is adorable!

Yeah, I got no rage reducing rationale on those.
