Yeah, that was pretty much Dan's take on it, Tep. With a side of personally pissed off, because apparently the sister got all huffy when her parents timidly objected, and went off on a rant about how if she were lesbian they'd feel honor-bound to accept her partner at family gatherings, and since this was her sexual identity they should have the same obligation toward her slave, or else they were oppressive and kinkophobic: to which Dan delivered a lovely little "Please stop being on my side" counter-rant.
eta: Fred, my (admittedly vague) memory of the letter was that the slave was there in full slave mode, "Yes mistress, no mistress, may I please mistress?" and sitting on the floor while everyone else was in chairs and all the rest.

I think the better analogy with lesbian would be to welcome the partner/slave to family gatherings. However, the family really doesn't need to see the sex toys, regardless of what they are.
Edit: JZ, I think we're agreeing. At least to the extent of separating the fact of the relationship from the gory details. Again, not an expert on such things, but I assume there are more subtle ways for the slave to be submissive in public.
