It was my understanding that we would always, automatically have a dedicated thread for any Joss show-

It's mine, too. I swear we had that conversation at one point. That said, I do think it's way too early to start a thread.
I think May is a good point to pick it back up. The pilot will be shot by then and there should be an indication of air date all being well.
I definitely think it should have it's own topic, by the way. It's a show which will generate discussion, and lots of it.

The situation has never arisen since b.org started and it's never been a part of our voted-on rules, therefore it ain't so.
It seems to me that any new Joss show should have its own thread, but not until it's actually on a network schedule. If people are worried about spoilers elsewhere, perhaps the pilot-related discussion could live in Buffy and Angel?

It certainly could be in Spoilers, except that spoilers for everything are in there, and some people are very spoiler-averse. I'm a spoiler whore, myself, but I do understand that there are more delicate sensibilities out there.
