My sister LOVES that movie. A bunch of my male friends swear it has a happy ending. They're misusing words. One of them has a daughter and I asked him to think of it in those terms--suddenly he was quite defensive, although he wouldn't grant me my point.

Dude, there really was no way to have a happy ending of any kind. I think he should have told his daughter the truth. His only other options were to continue with the wrongness of that relationship, or cut ties with her altogether, neither of which is great.

Keanu does have extensive Shakespeare training.

I remember reading a review of that production, written by Connie Champagne and Cintra Wilson, who traveled up from San Francisco just to sit in the back row and mock Keanu, and who found that he was in fact a perfectly credible Hamlet. Not an immortal and miraculous Hamlet for the ages, but perfectly solid and presentable and unembarrassing. Their disappointment at his unexpected competency was crushing.

From the reviews of that play, and from the adeptness he's shown at other comic roles, I'd love to see him attack Dogberry or Bottom or some other comedic low character. Something where the whole play's not riding on him and he can be completely uninhibited and gleeful. I think that's when he works best.
