Hec, I think you'd really like House of Sugar. It was published int he local weekly and is soon coming out in book form. The author is often talks about music and 40s movies: [link]
Thanks, Sue! That's a great strip. Reminded me of early Lynda Barry, but with a very distinct slant. I have to say I concur with her wistfulness about 40s hairstyles and rats.
Yeah, it definitely reminds me of Lynda Barry, but more with wistful than dark turns.
Namor gets a stamp? And it's old school Wolverine?

I'm unsurprised about Namor, since he and Captain American and the Human Torch were the core original three Marvel characters revived from the 40s. But I'm boggled that Spider-Woman gets one, and that Elektra gets two. I mean, Elektra's worthy, but where the hell is Ororo? She's the nearest thing Marvel's got to Wonder Woman.
The Torch has a history longer than the Fantastic Four?
And as for Namor...who likes him? He still has a comic? Pfft. Homewrecker.
The Torch has a history longer than the Fantastic Four?
Oh yeah. That's why they used his body for the Vision. Or something. I can't keep track of the continuity, but he dates back to the forties. I mean, Johnny Storm is a different Human Torch, but there was one way back when and he was recycled into the Marvel continuity.
And as for Namor...who likes him?
Well, he's always been a dick.

Okay, so Johnny is a different torch, how was the old one recycled in? Is that the Vision thing? I need a nap.

The original Human Torch was an android. His body was used for The Vision (at one point in continuity - who knows now). The Vision (who was a cheap comics knock off of Mr. Spock, incidentally) got his body from the Human Torch and his "brain patterns" from some guy called Wonder Man. I'm sure that's all been overwritten since.
Here's the wikipedia on the continuity, which has been plowed under several times since my explanation.
But I'm boggled that Spider-Woman gets one
I think Jessica has two.
I think. From when I saw these a couple days ago, that is.
But, you know, she's got a new title coming up, and Bendis less than threes her as much as I do, so... promotion, promotion, promotion.
