Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

No, I was serious. Never a term that I'd paid any attention to, since they didn't seem to to be talking about music I was listening to. But now I know -- thanks.

Jim's description alone is enough to make me never want to watch Green Wing ever.

It's really hit and miss. About 1/2 the storylines made me want to spork people, but I loved the other half -- so I never watched it live. FF is our friend.

"Fuck Western ideologically-motivated gender identification!" Sulu gasped, and came.

Well, shit. Let's just recap. I live in Cairo. My wee sister has just (like, days ago) graduated from Leeds University - where she lived a couple of streets away from the guys they arrested.

The fun keeps right on coming.

...and this guy? My God, I bet he wishes he'd stayed in Britain. The Egyptian police make no bones about torturing people. It's not even secret. It's what they do.

eta

Meanwhile Dr Badawi, one of the main proponents of inter-faith dialogue, a prominent voice for mainstream Islam, religious moderation and tolerance, the guy standing here with the Archbishop of Canterbury and Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks to condemn Thursday's bomb attacks just got refused entry to the US. He was going there to speak to American Muslims and to Jews and Christians as a voice for moderate Islam and for inter-faith understanding, trying to encourage bridge-building between communities. I've just watched him being interviewed on Sky News, and his courtesy and understanding at being kept waiting in immigration for six hours and then turned away made me feel (pointlessly) ashamed. ("...No, they couldn't tell me why I wasn't allowed into the country. But Security is one of the hardest and most important of jobs, and I do see that if they accidentally let someone in who then goes on to commit a crime they will have blood on their hands...")*

Full story

He was very dignified and good-humoured about it all, sitting there in his suit and tie, with considerably less facial hair than my dad, the picture of moderate mainstream Islam. What the hell kind of message is this?

*I'm paraphrasing, obviously, because I didn't write it down word-for-word as I watched the news.

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

Officials in Cairo said state security officials have begun to question him

Eep. I get the feeling that "question" is a pretty loose term in this case, then?

I'm going to go with a big yes. Jesus, there was a recent report into the conduct of Egyptian Police carried out by Egyptians which found them guilty of regularly using torture. We don't have an extradition treaty with Egypt, but we've got pretty good relations with the country. I really would not want to be this guy. I don't think he'd be getting mistreated if he were in a UK cell right now, but Egypt depends upon its tourist trade, and since some dickheads have attacked tourists here in Egypt within the past couple of months, the tourist trade has been threatened again. Which has a direct knock-on effect for people's friends and families in a whole host of different jobs. Can't see this guy being flavour of the month, somehow.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

US Immigration also turned back Bernadette Devlin [married last name] as a suspected terrorist. She's a grandma now, with a distinguished career behind her, but back in the day she won the Nobel Peace Prize....

I'm sure glad the Un-Americans here have some personal experience with Buffista-Americans to know that we're not all ignorant yahoos. I'm very ashamed of my country.

Ficht nicht mit Der Raketemensch!

Bernadette Devlin didn't win a Nobel Peace Prize. She was "nominated", which is an entirely meaningless term. Her conections with the INLA are a matter of public record, so it's not much of a stretch to say she's connected with terrorism.

I bop to Wittgenstein. -- Nutty

Am-Chau, Wonderfalls is repeated on Sky Mix tonight (Friday) at 8pm

Thanks, Katya, but since I don't have Sky Mix, I think I'll just have to wait for a rerun of the series. And it doesn't matter that I didn't know this until too late.

Thanks for the correction, Jim -- I am the victim of lousy reporting, then, which alas, isn't new.

(I suspect her INLA connection is what, 30 years old? Way to keep me safe, INS.)

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

(I suspect her INLA connection is what, 30 years old? Way to keep me safe, INS.)

I dunno, it's been sixty years since the Pope was in the German army, and people still give him grief for that.

I think Freddy Quimby should walk out of here a free hotel

Theodosia, could you link to the story? I can't find it anywhere.

Thanks.
