Spike? It's you. It's really you! My therapist thought I was holding on to false hope, but…I knew you'd come back. You're like…you're like Gandalf the White, resurrected from the pit of the Balrog, more beautiful than ever. Oh…he's alive Frodo. He's alive.

Gus, for the love of God, do not watch Angel dubbed into German. Please.

I've complained about it before. Their worst sin is to give Gunn a really high-pitched voice, which is just wrong, wrong, WRONG.

Buffy is almost as bad, but the main problem here is that many of the jokes are just untranslatable. A lot gets lost, and yet there are still many German Buffy fans, because it's so good to begin with, you can afford to lose about 20% of the jokes and it's still 38% better than anything else on TV.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

Tries to picture this. Falls over laughing. Chokes on an ice cube.

I'm not really sure where to put this... but the new radio series of The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy starts on Radio 4 tonight, 20 years after the last one ended. They're doing the remaining books starting with "Life, the Universe, and Everything", and all of the original cast (except those who have died in the meantime) are back on board - plus Douglas Adams himself as Agrajag. Download the trailers and listen to the episodes here:

(You can either listen to the episode "live" online, or on demand after Thursday night).

Bag the crypto. Say what is on your mind.

Just watched my first Angel dubbed in German.

So wrong.

Did I listen to Fiona? No.

I should have. Note to self: Listen to Fiona.

They found another vase of Osaris?

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

They found another vase of Osaris?

They probably borrowed one from Tupac's posse.

Yeah, that Willow -- always grandstanding. I bet you can find 10 Vases of Osiris on Ebay on any day of the week.

Heee.

I think they took his voice from one of the audiobooks or something. Before his death, while they were already working on the new series, he absolutely insisted that he had to play Agrajag. Over-identify, much?

I thought it was really well done, and actually got goosebumps when it started and the announcer came on. The same announcer, sounding pretty much unchanged over 25 years.

The one fundamental difference from the first two radio series, though, is that you know the jokes already. Or at least, you do if you've read the books as often as I have. But the execution was still good to hear.
