All of which led to the best banner I ever saw at a football game, when Scotland were playing Sweden, some wag had a banner that said "Swedes are neeps". Ahh, raises a smile to this day.
And you haven't lived till you try an Arbroath Smokie.

Bwah! Oh, that's nice. Like the local lad who put a sign up outside the junkyard which had rusty cars piled high inside it, saying "Car Park Full". Nice.

NOW you're talking. Arbroath Smokies are indeed lovely. Good breakfast food, 'specially with poached eggs. I'm also partial to Cloutie dumplings, although I can't spell 'em.
These are not the root vegetables you're looking for
I think Fay's talking about what we call a rutabaga.
A rutabega?
Y'know, I realize I have only a vague idea of what a turnip looks like, and though I recognize "rutabega" as a type of vegetable, I have NO idea what they're like, or how they are similar/different from a turnip. Hmm.
I kept meaning to try haggis while in scotland, but...
I also did not get a chance to try poutine in Montreal. I really wanted to, but accidentally waited until my last day, and then the place I went was OUT!

Ah've no lived!
Is this the right time to extol the virtues of deep fried Mars Bar?
No
Bwah.
Deep Fired Mars Bars are truly the evilist invention ever.
Student-y scoffing for the conscience free
Crispy on the outside, sweet sweet gooiness in the centre.
Yummy.
Edit: with a bottle of Irn-Bru of course.
You know, in theory I will try anything. The weirder the better. But somehow I never could bring myself to try a deep fried mars bar. It seemed too much like just eating lard by the spoonful. But friends have assured me they're nice. (Although they were very very pissed at the time)
this is a turnip and its flesh is white. these are swedes and their flesh is orange. this, according to Google, is a rutabaga. Which is, so the site assures us, essentially a cross between a turnip and a cabbage.
It's like root vegetable slash.
Lard by the spoonfull is a strict health diet compared to Deep Fried Mars Bar wickedness.
One per lifetime is the recommended dosage for the above.

You'll note that they look exactly the same.
"The name comes from the Swedish rotabagge, which is why this vegetable is also called a Swede or Swedish Turnip."
