If I only had a brain...

Oops, got it wrong. The Greeks imported a son of the Danish king. King George I of the Hellenes was the son of King Christian IX of Denmark.

Then they married lots and lots of Germans, so it all came to the same thing in the end. In particular, George I married Kaiser Bill's sister.

Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

The breakup of the Soviet Union cost Montessori schools a *fortune* in maps. (They have kids trace around little wooden countries and put them together into paper maps. They used to have one big USSR block. Now, not so much.)

Give the little suckers some markers! Sheesh!

Greeks can get really cheesed off by "the Greek Royal Family". The NYTimes gets nasty letters whenever they describe someone as Greek royalty.

with a gleam in my eye, and an almost airtight alibi

I went to college with a member of the Greek ex-royal family -- she was listed in the school phone book as "Greece, Alexandra."

Cool. I went to school with a Rockefeller, but I never met him.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I knew one of the Rhodes for whom Zimbabwe used to be named.

He was incredibly annoying and smug.

I got the Africa questions on that quiz right, and the -stan ones, like many here, terribly terribly wrong.

I sorta danced with a Vanderbilt. He later killed himself, very sad.

Let me guess -- the Macarena?

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

My "boyfriend" in preschool was heir to Sears, Roebuck on one side of his family and the other side was one of the old banking families (Warburgs? Schiffs? I don't remember which one, except that it wasn't the Rothchilds.) He was three at the time, and I was two. He decided that he was my "boyfriend," which meant that he followed me everywhere and wouldn't let anyone come near me because they might hurt me (this started after another girl bit me), and told me that I was too little to use the slide because it was dangerous.
