If the DVD is protected, you'll have to rip the DVD first. Then Handbrake can do its thing.
Is this a new "feature"? I've ripped commercial DVDs to iTunes directly from Handbrake with no intermediary step.

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!

is that right? I have not been able to accomplish this, Jessica.
Perhaps I am doing something wrong?
Before I discovered MPEG Streamclip, I used Handbrake to rip all my DVD clips for vidding, so I know it's possible. I'll double-check when I get home tonight (I don't have any commercial DVDs here at work).
I have also ripped commercial DVDs with Handbrake, though I tended to find it to be slower and less stable, so usually ripped with MacTheRipper first anyway.
It's taking its time, but it appears to be saving as mp4 files. I hate being such a computer idjit sometimes. Oh, and Tep, I'm using OS 10.5.5 right now.

I'm thisclose to getting a MacBook Pro (partly b/c if you buy it w/an education discount -- my mom works at a high school -- you get a free iPod Touch), but the only thing holding me back is not wanting to upgrade most of the software I use for my freelance jobs (Quark XPress, Photoshop CS). The versions are *just* old enough that they don't play well with Leopard (we've had problems at work with Leopard and older software versions), and I just don't want to deal with it right now.
I want one of the new MacBook Pros in the worst way! I'd really like to have the faster speed and greater memory. (I am SOOOO Tim Taylor-- I grunt and everything.) I think I'll treat myself if I sell a book.
Okay, it's "muxing" whatever that is.
Okay, I goobered, which was to be expected. It copied it as a movie to iTunes when all I wanted were the songs. Huh. What did I do wrong?
hmm. I just opened Handbrake and it doesn't look like there is an option to just extract the audio.
