In the past century, few topics have gripped the public's interest as tenaciously as has radiation. Our perceptions of it have shaped policy in arenas as diverse as medical care, energy, and international relations. The relationship has been a stormy one, though, as we've alternately adored radiation or despised it, depending on the morning's headlines.
