Lindsey: Why--why did you... Lorne: One last job. You're not part of the solution, Lindsey. You never will be. Lindsey: You kill me? A flunky?! I'm not just...Angel...kills me. You...Angel... Lorne: Good night, folks.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

I'm trying to remember if I grew to love her over time or if the cringiness was part of why I love her - probably both. You could skip to the second book, but there are some events from the first book that I went back and checked on while reading the second book so I can't wholeheartedly recommend that. If you really want to, though, I don't think you'd be completely lost.

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

I’m halfway through Paladin’s Grace on audio & these two have to at least kiss soon or I’m going to scream!

That's fair. I mean, I don't remember how the timing worked in detail, but that's generally a fair reaction halfway through I'd say

Eta: although there was a particular romance series that I noticed was very predictable in terms of what sort of action the characters would get at what percentage through the book and once I noticed that pattern I was a little put off

Speaking of audiobooks, Audible tells me there's a new version of All Systems Red with a full cast. I really liked listening to Murderbot with the single reader, I think I will have to give this a try and see if I like it as much.

-t it’s funny because I’ve definitely noticed that sort of pattern in romance novels too, and that’s why I read them. Their predictability is comforting to me, and my internal book clock is telling me that there should be more spice by now.

Because books.

Internal book clock! I love that idea.

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

It’s the only way I could think of to describe it.

That’s a great description! And I generally find it comforting, too, this particular repeating pattern was just too precise - like marching in lockstep rather than a dance

That makes sense, -t. There has to be enough variation so the brain doesn’t get bored.

For those keeping track at home, there is spice in the second half of the book.
