sarameg, it's a little misleading, because those estimates are on the high end for living costs. Tution for an in-state resident is $7434, and out-of-state is $17,820. See the numbers here.

Just checked out the University of Alaska Fairbanks (where I went). They break it down rather much, but the average appears to be a little under $10K for Alaska residents and a little over $17K for non-residents.* Go Nanooks! It may be freezing cold, but at least it's cheap.
* Including room and board but not including "health insurance, books, supplies, transportation, parking, miscellaneous expenses or special costs associated with international or exchange students." I thought they usually included books and supplies in these estimates. Hmm.
There's the rub.
Good god. I think all told, my school is $10-15K more than when I was there. I still can't believe the rental rates for the student apartments. 4 people/apt at almost $800 each. For a 4 bedroom + 1 bath, kitchen, lr. In a market where you could get a studio for $400. A racket. And it was a pain to get permission to be off campus. (There was a req to live on-campus the first couple of years, with very few exceptions, unless you were an adult student or had a kid or something like that.)
What Jesse said, sara. I know nothing of this "get my life together" I know of doing things though. You might wanna make a list and send it to me. We can "work on it together". I might even stop pinching your cheeks.
I am reminded of the fact that my 12 months of library school tuition (out of state) cost me more than the total of 3 years of law school tuition (in state).
Actually, I need to do that to deal with the enormous piles of crap on my desk. I will NEVER "clean my desk." But maybe I'll deal with the stuff to be filed, or the stuff to shred, or the stuff that just needs a home....
I'll let you know when I stop flailing. It's embarassing and pointless to ask others to deal with it, and the only reason it is coming out now is a) I'm having a bad day and b) annual review time, which brings out all the demons.

This is why I went to a private university for library school. I figured that if I was going to pay that kind of money, I was going to get the name. That, and there's no library school in Alaska, so in-state tuition was not an option.
eta: Hawaii used to offer reciprocal in-state tuition to Alaska, but then realized that students were mostly going one direction and not the other. Unfortunately, they realized this way before I went to library school.
I will now say noodle a lot and make cute concerned faces at my computer. carry on.
asking for help and talking about things should notbe embarrassing. I get that it may still be, but from where I am sitting, it doesn't look like the oh so many things that people do daily that they really SHOULD be embarrassed about (lady dancing in your seat on the subway I am looking at you).
Oooh, and they've closed the loophole I raised holy hell over. When I went for a semester abroad, I threw a shit fit over them trying to charge me room and board, since obviously, not! I won. Now, a semester abroad doesn't have r&b listed, but tuition is higher by the difference. Bastards.
My dealings with financial aid are why I don't give money to my college. I've told them so. I give it to my department (financial aid doesn't see a bit of that) but not the school. They were evilquakers.
