Academia is a funny place. I wonder if the faculty association is/was trying to keep him in that job in order to discourage termination for cause, which would erode rights of tenure? It can be a slippery slope (from their point of view) t /simplistic
Note: I am not a member of the professorate, I merely study it in school.

Yeah, I suspect that's it, but in this case, protecting the right of one of their members to sabotage their other members seems silly.
