Wash: So, two days in a hospital? That's awful. Don't you just hate doctors? Simon: Hey. Wash: I mean, present company excluded. Jayne: Let's not be excluding people. That'd be rude.

Don't we have a lizard-brain-thingy in the guts somewhere?

Flea mentioned this way back today, but I think that it is interesting enough to go back to. It was recently discovered that we do have a kind of proto-brain in our guts. It goes back to a time in our evolutionary history there was a neural net associated with the part of the body that ate and another neural net associated with the part of the body that digested food. At some point the net that was closer to the sensory organs, including the mouth, started developing into what we call a brain. The gut-net has stayed pretty much the same for millions of years. But it does process information, and it is of great interest to brain scientists because it's always easier to understand one thing (the brain) if you have an alternative to that thing to compare it to.

The funny thing, though, is watching as the nice, practical minded gastroenterologists try to deal with the ambitious, high powered neuroscientists who want to find out about the new gut-brain. It's a real clash of cultures.

I wish I could just go somewhere to get flensed but none of the whaling ships near me take Medicare.

So would that be the solar plexus?

Shit's all sorts of different now.

Fellow parents: When a child has a stomach bug, and hasn't eaten anything of substance, and is unable to keep anything down including water and PediaLyte, is it normal for them to sleep more soundly than they have in weeks?? She's breathing, she's warm, but she so deeply asleep, it's kind of unnerving.

So would that be the solar plexus?

No, just a simple neural net in the walls of the gut. But it does the basic things that a brain does--it reacts to external events and organizes a behavioral response. Not a really interesting response. Basically, "more acid" or "less motility". Still, it's a kind of a brain that we didn't know that we had, so for a psychology nerd it is pretty exciting.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Wow Rick, that is so weird.

Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

v. weird. would be neat to study it in context of eating disorders

Project Runway:

I think Kors has a lot of freaking nerve criticizing Santino for not thinking about "dressing real people". And Bagdley/Mishcka have balls of pure venitian lace to agree with them. I don't know that I've EVER seen A THING by either of them in a size 14 - the average size of a woman in the US. Ya know?

On edit: I stand corrected. I just found some Kors stuff on eBay in a 16. Still. The majority of designers don't make clothes for "average" women.

The feeling you get when your brain finally lets your heart get in its pants.

I know.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Damn Rick, that's creepy. Now I'm worried that brain will take over, or something, imposing its primal needs on me.

WHY AM I SO ALERT AT 11? AND HUNGRY?

Oh, right.
