I think it's because the perception is that the person is kidding her/himself as though by virtue of skipping that one soda, the calories fall off. Delusions are comedy gold. Diet soda has such a strong aftertaste I can't enjoy it. Which is one way it's like beer for me. My palate may be a freak.

Goodbye and Good Riddance 2005: the Year of the Penguin
Every year we watch the Charlie Brown special, do the Snoopy dance, wish everybody a Merry Christmukkah, and thank our Secret Santas in the good riddance thread. Which is this one, in case you were wondering. Oh, and 2005? Don't think we've forgotten about you.
Well, that doesn't go over very well at the office, for instance...
Heh. Your office, maybe.
I think it's because the perception is that the person is kidding her/himself as though by virtue of skipping that one soda, the calories fall off.
It's not a false perception. All through grade school I hung out at a friend's house where every member of the family verged on morbid obesity and the mom served huge portion meals where everything was coated with gravy or flavored with bacon grease. But they were all on "diets" because they drank Diet Pepsi or tea sweetened with Fastsweet.
The problem with the perception is also that if you switch off between diet and sugared sodas, most people will find one or the other unpalatable.
If you drink diet soda, staying with it is the best course of action. The food doesn't matter.
Except for a rare few people who can and do switch off, staying with one or the other just makes sense. Sugar and artificial sweetener are both things to get used to.
And some people can't stand either, of course.

On another note, completely out of left field... I've had this idea for a decade or so: Since people are going to drink what they want anyway, maybe they should flouridate soda pop.
Since people are going to drink what they want anyway, maybe they should flouridate soda pop.
Why stop there? Flouridate everything.
Sounds good, but the main dental worry about soda pop is the effect it's having on teeth. Telling parents doesn't seem to work.
I'm still puzzled when a city decides not to floridate their water.
I'm still puzzled when a city decides not to floridate their water.
That's because the floridaters have already mind-controlled you. Next thing it'll be the barcodes on everyone's foreheads, just you wait.
Damn. I was happy kissing 2005 goodbye, hoping things would get better in 2006. I spent Friday at the ER - the only diagnosis they have is vertigo.
Ick. Vertigo can be quite unpleasant. I hope it was a a short lived bug.
The problem with the perception is also that if you switch off between diet and sugared sodas, most people will find one or the other unpalatable.
Really? I drink both. I mean, not one after another (though sometimes when I get to fill my own drink at a place, I mix half regular and half diet). I'm more likely to drink the diet, because I usually care about the calories, but...I like the taste of regular better.
