Jayne: Captain, can you stop her from bein' cheerful, please? Mal: I don't believe there is a power in the 'verse that can stop Kaylee from being cheerful. Sometimes you just wanna duct tape her mouth and dump her in the hold for a month.

brillig

In other news, how is it determined when during the year Ramadan will fall? I know it migrates through the year, and I just noticed on my desk calendar that both Ramadan and Rosh Hashanah begin tonight at sundown. Happy Holidays, folks!

Silence means security silence means approval

If Roe v. Wade is overturned, the religious right can still mobilize the homophobic.

There's euthanasia as well.

There's always going to be an issue out there.

Problem is that if Roe is flipped there will be no reason for the Catholics to work with the Protestants politically. Outside of life issues they have little in common politically. Moment the Catholics start talking about economic disparity the Christian Coalition is out of there.

What is even happening?

But not what the hard-core folks want: A ban with only a exception for life and health of mother.
A lot of the real hard-core people don't even want to allow an exception for the health of the mother--they're life-of-the-mother-only and some are shaky on the life of the mother, frankly.

Back when I was younger the prevailing belief was no abortion, ever. Bush I was scourged for excepting rape and incest, which was TWO STEPS TOWARDS AUSCHWITZ in the minds of the true believers. Step one, of course, was life and health of the mother.

Over the last 5-10 years the pro-life movement has softened to life and health of the mother. Only the real nutjobs would drop health (since, generally, "health" includes "will having this baby kill her?") and the super-nutjobs drop life. The loony reasoning is "doctors would lie." Yeah, so?

One step to the left of L&H is "rape and incest," though many question how the law would define rape in this circumstance (especially in absence of a conviction).

Gah. Really?

Yeah. Then you watch their poor brains explode when you throw an ectopic pregnancy at them.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

A little kid raising money for school by bringing candy RIGHT TO YOU?

Sadly, she didn't even bring the candy to me. I had to order it.

I have a non-SCOTUS legal (kinda?) question: I just saw an ad that described the product as "patent pending." Does that mean that someone has actually said the application has some merit, or just that they filled out the patent application?

Why am I thinking that the ban on so-called "partial birth" abortions does not make an exception for the health of the mother?

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

Tom DeLay indicted. Again.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Why am I thinking that the ban on so-called "partial birth" abortions does not make an exception for the health of the mother?

My understanding is that the ban on Dilation & Extraction abortions does not mean that all late term abortions are banned. It simply places a ban on the preferred method. There are other methods, but these put the mother at a much higher risk for complications.
