To me it feels like they're cutting out plot and replacing it with a commercial for an artist. Unless it turns out that one of the barristas can read people's emotions while they're singing. Then it might be okay.

Did I miss something? Is this a new development in the story?" I would have liked the scene *much* better if they had left out guy #1 and his girlfriend and just had the singer singing "Love Hurts."
The whole karaoke sequence was an allusion to the Duncan/Veronica/Logan triangle. The first guy with his happy romanticism represented Duncan, and then Courtney comes in with the angsty Logan side of LoVe love.
That makes a bit more sense. It still just seemed odd to me, although I only waste this much thought on shows I really like.
That makes a bit more sense.
Not to me. That would be even worse than just putting it in there to plug tha artist.
But DX, they're not really "plugging" the artist. I mean, they don't even identify who he is. This isn't "Cibo Matto? I love Cibo Matto? Let's all go see Cibo Matto!"
Cibo Matto clog dances?
If they'd had a couple of short lines to make them tertiary characters -- sort of like the Kevin Smith role last week, but only lighter -- it would have felt more integrated to me. Instead, we had a guy who seemed to be wasting his vocal abilities doing karaoke. I'd rather a semi-drunk Logan got up and warbled at us, if we are going to commit karaoke.

The first guy, Lars, was actually someone we saw back in "Like a Virgin."
I actually really liked the karaoke scene and its thematic resonance, but we stayed far too long on Courtney singing (though I liked the reaction shot of the happy couple). If they'd shaved that off just a wee bit, it would have been great.
At least the Cibo Matto-thing meant something to the characters there and then, and that justified it. The kareoke cameos? They bring nothing to the show besides making me feel like I'm still watching the commercials.
I hated the karaoke in S1 -- it seemed gratuitous and watch-from-the-hall-ish, AND it was the moment I almost stopped watching, b/c how much more of a Mary Sue could Veronica be? (I kept watching, obviously, and her Mary Sue-ishness lessened over the rest of the season.)
So the idea of more karaoke this season is really annoying to me.
