I definitely felt sorry for Beaver rather than angry in that last scene with Mac. For me, there was definitely a sense that he wasn't trying to hurt Mac as much as he was trying to get away from the conversation and where it might go.
I think you're right, there. I just was angry on Mac's behalf. When I thought it was a closet/beard issue, I just was angry that he'd use one of the few people who is decent to him as a beard.
But I don't think it's that simple any more. It's odd to change my mind so much, in just a few hours. When I was seeing people elsewhere expressing disbelief that Beaver could be gay, my initial reaction was, "Oh, stop deluding yourselves." Then I thought about the molestation issue, and 1000 lights went off in my head, at once. I still can't find all the switches.
I really liked this episode.
I'm having a wondering. Is Beaver the Mayor of Standoffia because him and Cordy've been at it and he's feeling guilty?
I can't put them together in my head (nor do I want to) but I thought I'd chuck the theory out there.
What is the last thing BEaver says to Mac? After he stands up and says "You are now. " He says something else.
"Have a good life" or something along those lines.
ETA: And the molestation thing is definitely a possibility, and would certainly explain/excuse his behavior, but until we get confirmation I'm going to be stubbornly enraged on Mac's behalf.
"Have a good life" or something along those lines.
I think it was "Good luck getting laid."
I think it was "Good luck getting laid."
I didn't hear that. I doubt he said it. If he did in fact say that, I hope Mac wrings his scrawny little neck.
I'm pretty sure he didn't say anything as dismissive as that.
"Good luck getting laid" sounds pretty much like what Bob & I heard him mumble. It was harsh, yo.
I heard something more along the lines of "have a good life". If it was "good luck getting laid", I think I need to switch to being angry at him.
He said "good luck getting laid." I watched it twice and I think the closed-captioning supports that. I remember wondering at first about whether Beaver might be gay. They just did an ep on gay students at the school, and why some are afraid to come out. Certainly Dick would not be supportive. But on rewatching, I got a vibe that he had been abused somehow. He was hurt and the comment to Mac came from that. I'm not excusing him for hurting Mac, but I think he's in so much pain that he had to say something to shut the topic down for good.
Would Dick be the abuser? It does happen -- older siblings abusing younger ones. Dick seems to lack any empathy - he's pretty unconcerned about anyone's feelings but his own.
