What should I do, then? Send her a gift? Sacrifice? … Unholy fruit basket?

Tom? What are your opinions of our server's health?

I think we need more RAM.

I also think rebooting the server would help a lot in the short term, though.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I think we need more RAM.

One of our two upgrade options takes us to 1GB instead of 512MB. That will cost us $40 more per month than what we have now. The other option that keeps us at 512 and takes us from a 2.6GHz Celeron to a 2.5GHz P4 is an increase of $10/month.

What do you recommend?

As for rebooting, do you want to take that in your hands? You're better suited than I am to catch anything that didn't come up right automatically.

What do you recommend?

Seriously looking at other vendors.

Is tomorrow morning (around 7:00am EDT) OK?

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

Seriously looking at other vendors.

Not my call, but, Yeah, this. I don't know the details of our current hosting, but that much more every month for a one-time install of a stick of RAM and/or a version of PHP that's coming up on 4 years old now?

Before a recoding effort? I say that because I'm not sure we'll need dedicated hosting at a new vendor, and I'd hate to lock ourselves into it for a given time period if we can write ourselves out of it here.

That having been said--I'm not sure how long it will take to write out of it here, and perhaps that's as well done as somewhere else.

Okay. What's on your need list for a new vendor?

From a development point of view, I'm looking for PHP >5, MySQL >=5, PostgreSQL >8. From an admin-lite point of view, a control panel of comparable functionality to Plesk, but I really don't know what's out there.

Is tomorrow morning (around 7:00am EDT) OK?

I certainly have no problem with it.

No, see, we get a whole new server.

No, I have no idea how that hardware can possibly be *new* in 2008, but that's how it's presented.

Ick. I'm getting horrible blanchy thoughts at the database migration effort. Yay...no. But what must be done, must be done.

Do you periodically do database dumps? My biggest worry is that the database doesn't come up cleanly after a reboot.

I had an automatic job set up, but it's been a while since I checked. Let me go see.

Tom, let's put off the reboot until I've had a chance to do a full fresh site backup, shall we? For practice, and just in case?

In the meanwhile I guess here's a good as place as any to consolidate our requirements and hosts that can meet them.

At work, we've had to resort to captchas (or whatever the fuck) for our notifications. PIA (I speak as a user) but worth it (as a server person.)
