Zoe: Don't think it's a good spot, sir. She still has the advantage over us. Mal: Everyone always does. That's what makes us special.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

that much more every month for a one-time install of a stick of RAM and/or a version of PHP that's coming up on 4 years old now?

No, see, we get a whole new server.

No, I have no idea how that hardware can possibly be *new* in 2008, but that's how it's presented.

Ick. I'm getting horrible blanchy thoughts at the database migration effort. Yay...no. But what must be done, must be done.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

Do you periodically do database dumps? My biggest worry is that the database doesn't come up cleanly after a reboot.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I had an automatic job set up, but it's been a while since I checked. Let me go see.

Tom, let's put off the reboot until I've had a chance to do a full fresh site backup, shall we? For practice, and just in case?

In the meanwhile I guess here's a good as place as any to consolidate our requirements and hosts that can meet them.

At work, we've had to resort to captchas (or whatever the fuck) for our notifications. PIA (I speak as a user) but worth it (as a server person.)

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

I just heard from meara, who says

  • board has been slow and fickle on and off all day
  • now unable to get in to www.buffistas.org
  • was able to get in to buffistas.org (with no www), but was logged out when she got there
  • even then, loading v. slow and couldn't post before timing out

other parts of the internets are fine.

meara - May 22, 2008 7:09:18 pm PDT #2235 of 4673

Am having horrid time posting and refreshing the board this evening...as is Amych...

meara - May 22, 2008 7:18:50 pm PDT #2236 of 4673

Huh. And now it's fine, AND apparently during all that slow waiting times, it was secretly posting our posts! Interesting....Fickle, fickle board!

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I'm poking around right now, so response time may very well be fickle. I'm also going to wake up in the middle of the night and take the board down for a quick full database backup.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

So I rebooted the server this morning. Let's see if things are a little zippier now.

[edit: apparently not]
