I think with birds that light entering through the skull can effect sleep, so painting the head blocks the light and changes the sleep patterns.

Tangentially, I vaguely remember a study where it was discovered we have photoreceptors on the backs of our knees. Which I find hilarious.

I've heard that light on the back of the knee thing. As a remedy for jet lag, I think. It was too strange for me to pursue, though.
