Actually, Allyson responded on my behalf before I returned to catch up on the discussion. At any rate, I'd be willing to let one mincing, negative portrayal slide given Larry, Willow, and Tara (and most of the cast of Angel at one time or another) if not for the issue of the formerly geek-friendly show holding Andrew up for ridicule over many of the traits that were once lauded as strengths in the main characters. And the audience.

Yeah. *sigh* I wonder if I can ever buy S7. Apparently, years on, I'm still bitter.

I've been slowly rewatching Buffy with my sister, since she's in town and has expressed interest in the show before. We recently finished Season 2. She is in love with Oz, naturally, and I remembered why I love this show so much. I also remembered why it's so hard for people to get into - if I were to turn this show on to an episode of Bad Eggs, or Ted, or Go Fish, or Killed by Death, or, actually, pretty much anything in Season 2, I probably wouldn't tune in again. The great episodes are greatest in context, and the not-great episodes are just so... well, not bad, because the dialogue and characters are consistently fantastic, but... silly. I mean, I probably would be more willing to give such a show a chance now than I would have been when the show aired, but that's BECAUSE of Buffy, and not everybody has had that push to accept silly horror/fantasy.

I guess I'm yet again just thankful for the roommate who encouraged my watching it when I was depressed and had mono, because it's the only way I would ever have watched enough to fall in love. Now, of course, I only watch TV that way - if it's recommended with enough magic words ("dialogue," "writing," and "dramedy" being fairly important ones) then I'll watch at least 10 episodes before giving up.

Anyway. Season 2 is still really good. Passion and Becoming remain some of the most powerful TV moments I've seen. I'm looking forward even more to Season 3 though - I always thought it provided a better balance between the good and the bad than season 2. There's nothing quite as great as Passion in there, at least not along serious lines, but I think it's consistently more enjoyable. Plus, Faith. And more Oz.

That's why I like S3 best. The arc's not as perfect, but almost every episode is.
