Discussion of the Mutant Enemy series, Firefly, the ensuing movie Serenity, and other projects in that universe. Like the other show threads, anything broadcast in the US is fine; spoilers are verboten and will be deleted if found.

Saw Serenity again last night, with one of my sisters. She did not watch "Firefly" or "Buffy" or "Angel." She liked most of the movie. Laughed out loud a lot. But the scenes with the Reavers freaked her out and she would not go see the film again. (She regularly sees movies she likes mulitple times.)
This sister sees a lot of movies and had seen the "Serenity" previews several times. She was not interested in seeing the movie after seeing the previews and only went because I suggested it. After she saw "Serenity" she thought the movie was not well-marketed. She said that fans of the show were already going to see the movie and needed very little prompting. It was folks who never saw the series or any of Joss' work who needed to be told why they should want to go.
After she saw "Serenity" she thought the movie was not well-marketed.
When I told friends I had seen and enjoyed Serenity, I, without fail, got a "Really?" or some variation on "Really?" . It has a B-movie sheen and the telly ads didn't work to dispel that.
Oh, addendum to my post last night, after the movie my friend did take a moment to mention how positively smoking she thought Gina Torres was in The Dress.
As for the earlier references to wanting more Dark!Mal, a world of no. I think he was plenty dark in the final cut of Serenity, and I had plenty of love for the character to excuse his behavior. Had they gone any darker, I would have hated him. I can't imagine how people going in cold would have reacted.
Kalshane, you're probably right about DarkerMal. I wouldn't want him to be any more tortured or cruel than he is.
Some of the scenes I've read in the script that were not in the movie, I think the movie's better without, and the DarkerMal stuff is undoubtedly in that category.
There's a meme on LJ right now. Oh like you were surprised. Anyhow, it's "Which Peanuts character are you?"
One of the possible answers is Marcie. Sir.
OMG! It all makes sense, now. Zoe is totally Marcie!
ita, why don't you count as a fighter? Because you've totally got professional counted. Just the not-killing-your-coworkers thing proves that beyond debate.
I was wondering the same thing, Betsy, but then I guessed that by break 50%, ita means go over 50%, and not just be at 50%.
Saw Serenity again tonight with a group of Browncoats in a "VIP" theatre (like, 24 seats and they bring drinks to your seat). It was a nice way to see it. We went out to dinner as a group afterwards and had a very pleasant time chatting about the film. It always surprises me when there are people who are fans of the film who didn't watch Buffy or Angel at all. One guy said that the dark setting of FF/Serenity really appealled to him, but the brighter look of Buffy never did.
Sometimes genre matters. I love Tim's work a lot, but *The Inside* was too scary for me; it pushed in a different direction than his other work and I couldn't/didn't want to cope.
