Spike's Bitches 21 Gunn Salute

[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risque (and frisque), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

"This bar smells like kerosene and stripper tears."

I have turned off my phone and have been knitting (which I dedided to learn how to do on Saturdy) all day. I'm feeling the urge to hole up for the rest of the week.

My cousin's baby shower, which I'm 1/3 hostess of, is Saturday. I'm taking Friday off to get down there and shop and get her stepmother's house decorated. Everyone knows this because I've mentioned that going back this weekend means that I can't go out of town for a while. Unfortunately, this means I missed going to Mardi Gras back home this weekend with my friends who were kind enough to parade-dial me all weekend to remind me of how much fun I wasn't having. Saturday morning, a friend called me to tell me her grandmother died and her grandfather was in the hospital, both in Tyler so she went to see FE, who also called to tell me friend's grandmother died, and that she said we'd all be going to the funeral Saturday (as in the day of the shower). Friend in NY called to see if I could give her a ride if she flew into Dallas, and I told her I could drop her off Thursday on my way home, but wouldn't be going because of aforementioned shower, and got a guilt trip. This morning damn near all the friends called to tell me another friend's (who also called several times this weekend) uncle was in surgery and likely going to die and her aunt had a heart attack at the news. Now they all want to know what my plans are for that weekend because shouldn't we be going to funerals, and what do I mean I can't make it...

Knitting, even as a beginner who has to rip a lot, is much less frustrating.

Sure I went over to the Dark Side, but just to pick up a few things.

I like the dolphins from the second link.

Up with the sun

A former employer (a newspaper) lost a huge lawsuit over this and, as a result, they'd send you home after you'd worked 40 hours, even if you were in mid word.

That sounds crazy annoying, and yet I'd kind of love it. (My newsroom doesn't use timesheets, and 50-hour weeks aren't unusual in my office. I work less only because my new boss doesn't really know how to use me.) But how did they manage to actually get the paper out at deadline?

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Serious? Has never been true for me--everyone gets the same, unless they get none.

Exempt employees (at least in SF law firms, where I've worked) don't have to track any partial day appointments like medical appointments, or even sick days. Technically they don't accrue sick days, but can take as many as they like as long as they don't venture into Short Term Disability land. (I'm sure there's a hard rule on the distinction, but we maintain it purposefully fuzzy so we have more discretion.)

Frankly, meara, I think you're getting kind of screwed. With all the travel you do, you should be allowed a little more discretion about coming and going. However, a lot of that has to do with industry culture and I expect yours is all about fairly rigid protocols.

I guess I should note that while rules for exempt employees vary from firm/company to firm/company, the general idea is that you work and work and work. Typically, exempt employees put in 60 hour weeks around here. (Not my boss, though.)

"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

But how did they manage to actually get the paper out at deadline?

It was a big daily and they just hired more people. This was quite a while ago and they may have slipped back into their bad old habits, but a multimillion dollar lawsuit will get management's attention for a while. It usually meant that I didn't work a lot of Fridays.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Well, if you've got broadband off of a cable modem you can probably still transfer your number to Vonage have have a land line.

Huh. I'll have to check that out.
