A former employer (a newspaper) lost a huge lawsuit over this and, as a result, they'd send you home after you'd worked 40 hours, even if you were in mid word.

That sounds crazy annoying, and yet I'd kind of love it. (My newsroom doesn't use timesheets, and 50-hour weeks aren't unusual in my office. I work less only because my new boss doesn't really know how to use me.) But how did they manage to actually get the paper out at deadline?

Serious? Has never been true for me--everyone gets the same, unless they get none.

Exempt employees (at least in SF law firms, where I've worked) don't have to track any partial day appointments like medical appointments, or even sick days. Technically they don't accrue sick days, but can take as many as they like as long as they don't venture into Short Term Disability land. (I'm sure there's a hard rule on the distinction, but we maintain it purposefully fuzzy so we have more discretion.)

Frankly, meara, I think you're getting kind of screwed. With all the travel you do, you should be allowed a little more discretion about coming and going. However, a lot of that has to do with industry culture and I expect yours is all about fairly rigid protocols.

I guess I should note that while rules for exempt employees vary from firm/company to firm/company, the general idea is that you work and work and work. Typically, exempt employees put in 60 hour weeks around here. (Not my boss, though.)

It was a big daily and they just hired more people. This was quite a while ago and they may have slipped back into their bad old habits, but a multimillion dollar lawsuit will get management's attention for a while. It usually meant that I didn't work a lot of Fridays.

I had a friend here who had Vonage and hated her reception. Makes me leery of trying it.

But they have a great commercial.
