I love
Popeye
too. Though Frank and I tend to agree in taste.
I think Scola's point is apt, but also points out the virtues of the movie. Namely it's deeply affectionate and reflective of its source material - it's just pulled in odd directions by the differing visions of Feiffer and Altman. Still the casting was perfect, the music is fun, the world they created is detailed and beautifully other. Also, provides "He Needs Me" for later use in
Punch Drunk Love.
On topic: Cherry 2000, Ice Pirates...
What movies can you absolutely make zero case for as good movies, but are absolutely enthralled with?
Phantom of the Opera.
Once again, Betsy is me. Except I'm betting she wouldn't put
Queen of the Damned
on her list.
'Fraid not. Nor
Van Helsing.
'Fraid not. Nor Van Helsing.
I still haven't been able to bring myself to watch
Van Helsing.
Or
League of Extraordinary Gentleman.
the movie that occurred to me was one I flipped on to recently: FLASH GORDON.
Ditto! The soundtrack is part of what makes the film so... so...
itself.
Ice Pirates...
This, too. Much fun.
The other movie that falls into this category for me is "Zorro the Gay Blade." Cracks. Me. Up. (One cent, two cents, three cents a peso! All those for Zorro, stand up and say so!)
Or League of Extraordinary Gentleman.
There is nothing good or fun about this movie, even by flashy camp standards. NOTHING.

I have a friend who swears it's worth watching for Mina's costumes, but I don't know if I believe her.
Underworld. If we did have cable, and I happened to catch it, I'd have to watch for the pretty. And then turn it off when Scott Speedman turned into whateverthehell he was.

And like a lot of Altman, a great film for playing "hey, it's that guy".
I liked Quintet.
Actually so did I, but I have a fondness for ponderous, end-of-the-world movies. It really needed to be dubbed into Russian and subtitled.
