I just think it's rather odd that a nation that prides itself on its virility should feel compelled to strap on forty pounds of protective gear just in order to play rugby.

P-C,

It's all your fault.

I am every manner of squicked after viewing Flesh + Blood. I can't wring it out of my mind.

Gang rape! Plague! Senseless murder! 41 year old Rutger Hauer (who looked geee-rate! by the way) tugging on the nipples of 23 year old Jennifer Jason Leigh. Brion James' member. Burning dog meat. (sounds like the name of a band, but still.)

I think I'm honestly traumatized.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Wait. Why the hell is it my fault?

Didn't you point me to it?

I believe I heard the word 'grit' flowing from your tagline.

Then again, perhaps you were just reporting something you heard.

Still. I need a scapegoat. Please oblige.

That would be me.

Didn't like it?

Oh Jeez. False attribution. Sorry P-C.

Sean, appreciate the recommendation (now I remember) based on my wanting to get into the medieval vibe.

This one was just hard for me to take. I'm listening to the Verhoeven commentary to get some insight now.

I can't even.

Been so long since I've seen Flesh and Blood. There's a Verhoeven commentary? Hmm. Anyone else? (To the Googlemobile!)

Nope. Just Paul with his very interesting accent.

"First they wear the red closes and then Rootgr changes into the white closes."

He's throwing in a lot of history and info about traveling in Spain.

During the narrowly averted gang-rape scene, he talks about how hard it must have been for JJL to have a million people around (night, location shoot, no privacy) and then merrily switches into a chalk talk about the costumes. Jarring? Kinda.

I suspect you (and I) weren't the target audience they were aiming her at. However, I don't think I can complain too loudly about this aspect, as the first movie had Stephen Dorff lounging around without a shirt all the time for no discernible reason. Not to mention a confrontation scene with Udo Kier that made the Angel/Lindsey subtext look subtle in comparison.

Trust me, there were parts of that movie that bothered me greatly. But you know, medieval times? Not pretty. This way you get all the bases covered.
