If the song has to actually explictly mention the work of art, rather just do a namecheck, hm. Off the top of my head, there's "Certain Songs" by The Hold Steady, which references a whole bunch of 80s songs, and "504" by the Old 97s talks about an "Elmore Leonard novel" (got the band a nice note from Mr L., too!)... I'll keep looking.
I'm stuck on the Mountain Goats's "Grendel's Mother," which is *about* Beowulf, but doesn't actually mention it.
Lloyd Cole's "Rattlesnakes" mentions reading Simone De Beauvior and Eve Marie Saint in On The Waterfront.
What song would you play at every birthday party you would ever throw for yourself?
That's Right - Lyle Lovett
You are my Sunshine
Happy Birthday - Altered Images
A song that mentions a piece of art (movie, sculpture, poem, whatev.)
Andy Warhol - David Bowie
Would U2's "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" count? The lyrics are taken directly from Salman Rushdie's novel of the same name.
Barenaked Ladies "If I Had $1,000,000" references buying some art ... I think it mentions Picasso directly, but I might be crazy.
Ooh, "The Bad Touch" by the Bloodhound Gang and "One Week" by the Barenaked Ladies both reference The X-Files.
Or, for that matter, you could go with Bree Sharp's "David Duchovny."
What song would you play at every birthday party you would ever throw for yourself?
I am currently addicted to Cibo Matto's "Birthday Cake." That might be appropriate. In a way.
May the song mention another song?
If so, "Radar Love" by Golden Earring ("Comin' On Strong" by Brenda Lee)
(ETA: And "Summer Rain" by Johnny Rivers ("Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"))
May the song mention another song?
"Land of a Thousand Dances" by... lots of people.
There's a song on the new Amy Rigby album called "Last Night I Was Dancing With Joey Ramone" that's really sweet. It mentions as many different songs as "Land of a Thousand Dances".
U2's "The Ground Beneath Her Feet"
God, Kate put that on her Buffistamix CD, and I just LOVE it.
May the song mention another song?
Metric's "Siamese Cities" mentions "Crimson and Clover."
