I thought of U2, but I'm using a song of theirs for another track, and the only artist I'm willing to repeat if I have to is the Nields. I have no Prince, no XTC, no Squeeze, some Elvis Costello but not the right year.

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.
"Rock Lobster" would be an excellent choice. Is it really 1980? I would've guessed earlier.
Edit: X-post.
I didn't mean to make everyone feel old! Sorry.
"Rock Lobster" is 1979? Damn. I got it off a clearly misinformed website.

Thanks for the link, David, but I already looked through a Top 100 list for 1980 and didn't, amazingly, have any of them.
Edit: I'm trying, Steph! I'm trying!

"Private Idaho" is a great song in its own right, though. I might prefer it to "Rock Lobster." Though not to "52 Girls" ("Why won't you dance with me? / I'm not no Limburger!") or "Planet Claire."
Kate, those of us born during the Carter administration have to stick together. We are NOT YOUNG, dammit. (I mean, young enough for all reasonable purposes, but not so freakishly young that we should make others feel old.)
Billboard Top Hits compilation for 1980
I would be SO tempted to use something from the Fame soundtrack -- either the title cut or "I Sing the Body Electric"

Dude, "Hot Lunch Jam" is the hit to pick off that sdtrk.
Are you wickedly opposed to reggae, Kate?
Bob Marley's Uprising came out in 1980 which has "Redemption Song" - one of my faves.
