Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Btw, it's Jimmie Dale Gilmore, not Jimmy. He was named for the great Jimmie Rodgers. Yodelayhee-ayhee-ohohohoh!

Yeah, I had to fix a bunch of mistakes off Gracenote.

I can't help you with that decision but I sure would love a copy of that mix.

Gladly done. Shoot me your address to my profile addy.

That's the pain / That cuts a straight line down through the heart / We call it love

Hey David, any chance I could get a copy of that CD too? I can't remember if you have my address or not.

I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve. - John Prine

Joe, I was rushing to the end to say that the Willie song seems the most expendable to me (which is probably the first time I've ever thought that).

As usual I was being a smartass, Hayden. I love the song, and the album it's from, Phases and Stages, is one of the ones I profiled for Lost in the Grooves.

"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

David, that's definitely a mix after my own heart. I can't tell you what to delete, although I've acquired a personal and probably temporary distaste for Tecumseh Valley. For six months after Townes died, practically every singer I saw thought he had to do a Townes song and they almost all did Tecumseh Valley. Their versions ranged from bad to "I think I'll go to the bathroom and hope the sound doesn't reach there."

Oh, Ginger, I'm sorry that you have a dislike for "Tecumseh Valley" now, because it's such a great song. The first version of it I heard was Nanci Griffith's, but I've fortunately been spared a thousand lesser covers of it.

I'm sure I'll get over it, because it's a great song. I too first heard it by Nanci Griffith.

Kate and Ginger - send me you addresses.

makes notes for mailing

I almost put on "Snake Mountain Blues" but "Tecumsah Valley" worked better nestled up against the moody "Silver Raven." I do love Our Mother The Mountain quite a bit - the ultimate country/goth album until Johnny resurrected his career with Rick Rubin. My favorites though are the title track, "Kathleen," and "St. John the Gambler."

joe, that Willie record is as good as advertised and since all the songs are new to me (except "Sister's Coming Home" which I knew from the Emmylou cover) it's quite a treat to get so much Willie in his prime.

Tragic news of the week? There's a HUGE free bluegrass/folk festival in Golden Gate Park next Sunday with much talent that will be conflicting with Emmett's birthday party. It's got Greg Brown (JZ's alltime favorite), Guy Clark, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Del McCoury and dozens of others. Le sigh. Might be able to catch some of the later shows.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

You obviously showed poor planning when you conceived Emmett.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

His birthday was on the twenty-third, but we pushed the party back a week since his Mom was out of time.

Here's the full schedule - fifty acts at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Emmylou, Gillian Welch, Steve Earle, Nick Lowe, Robert Earl Keen, Hazel Dickens...
