Oh, I'd forgotten about the video. It was hilarious! Low on the budget, but high on the charm.
My only complaint with the first album was their hair. What were they thinking? Luckily they let their hair down (literally) by the time Mars came out. I remember interviewing Brad Sheppard a couple of years later. I asked about the hair but he seemed too embarrassed to even discuss it.
You interviewed Brad Shepherd? That's pretty cool. Of course, he kept the hair long after the others bowed to, well, I'm not sure really. The reality of the Australian summer perhaps.
Ok, now playing some Gurus, Leilani to be specific.
When I saw the Replacements on their Pleased To Meet Me tour, they were doing a half-assed cover of "What's My Scene?," which I mainly remember because my high school band also covered it.
Don Novello, alias Father Guido Sarducci, alias Lazlo Toth, is doing Leonard Lopate's Survival Kit segment right now. (Premise: what would you take, beyond the basics which will be provided, if you had to be stranded on an deserted island or a snowbound cabin.) His opening comment, "You should have Ted Kaczynski do this." Follow up: "Most guys who go to prison, it's not an upgrade in living conditions." He picked a lot of old soul music including Smokey Robinson and the Chi-Lites' "Have You Seen Her", the latter prompting the quip, "I got in touch with [Gary] Condit and suggested he should use that for his theme song in the next election. That or [the Coasters] 'Searchin''." He's not everyone's cup of tea, but he's one of my heroes. Check out the Lazlo books if you've never seen them.
Which was the first song I played during my two week 20th anniversary extravaganza.
Oh, wicked cool number to open with. Never fails to get my pulse a-racing. Though it is actually just a scootch over 3 minutes (had to dig out the CD).

I think my favourite at the moment is the tried and true Bittersweet. Though in times past, 1,000 Miles Away has been known to do me in. Not really one of their most popular, it's a personal thing.
I've been earwormed all day by Jack Scott's "What in the World's Come Over You." Is this a good thing, or a bad thing?

It wasn't that big a deal here, since college stations were pretty much the only ones playing them.

I remember that we had a radio 12" of IWYB before we got the album, and it was a "radio edit" that skipped the second verse before the first chorus. So maybe the version you heard back then
was
under 3 minutes!

I remember blasting that song from my dorm room. One of my dormmates, who was generally tolerant of my musical choices, but only just, passed by my room, stopped dead in front of it, and said in a stunned voice "Hey! This is pretty good!"

I don't think there's ever a bad time to be earwormed by some Jack Scott. All of the sudden I have "Goodbye Baby Bye Bye" in my head.
The Brooklyn Country Music Festival. Most of these acts are local, I think. But if anyone's familiar with someone I shouldn't miss please let me know. I know the organizer. Neither of us is at the top of the other's buddy list, but it looks like a cool event and God bless him for doing it -- it's a crapload of work. I hope the Wissler Family is good because I adore Linda May & it's always uncomfortable when a band is lame & your friend who's in it says, "What did you think?"
