But it gives waaaaay too much credit to Bowie (looking at you, Jim).
I don't think that's possible. Jilli, back me up, here.

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

the 70's list? 2 Clash albums above Never Mind the Bollocks which is putting the cart before the horse. Bowiewise it ignores my favourite album (or indeed work in any art) Diamond dogs, so that's silly. But it's a good list. I don't own enough '70s.
Interesting how high The pop Group are yet Birthday party=nowhere. Fashions change, I remember when the Pop Group were utterly forgotten outside Bristol.
And then I can say, "Cool. But the 21st century didn't come out of nowhere. Try this."
Which is awesome -- even if I never actually pick up a jazz CD, I feel like if/when I do, I'll be in a better place to choose because of you.
Thread happiness reigns.

Bowie is God.
What, you want more than that?
Ziggy Stardust has (to my ears & mind) influenced almost every single rock album released after it. Everyone borrows from Bowie, even moreso than they borrow from The Beatles or Led Zep.

I also maintain that that album is so solid, if it were released today, it would be a smash hit.

Oh, totally.
(Once I get tired of listening to the new Cure cd over and over and over -- yay new Cure! -- Ziggy Stardust is going back in the cd player.)
Jilli, we're seeing the Cure Aug. 6!

There was no way I was willing to pay $50+ to go sit through a bunch of bands I either don't know or don't really care about, outside in the blazing sun, and THEN see the Cure.
The Cure just played a festival in Paris where one of the other bands was Placebo. Why oh why couldn't *that* festival have been the one touring the States?
Mel C (formerly Sporty Spice) also released a techno-y dance track called "I Turn to You," which I simply love. There's a particular remix that's my favorite version, but I can never remember what it's called.
Her "Northern Star" album is a nice slice of pop, by the way. Recommended if you like that sort of thing, but probably not for full price. Used CDs are our friends.
edited because I keep typing extra words today

Heh. My follow-up was going to be what you thought about the other bands, and you answered it without me asking.
The show starts at 5 here, so I'm figuring it should be cooling down by the time they play. But yeah, the tix were overpriced. I decided to go because we've never seen them, they don't tour very often, and I'd like to see them before they break up for good, again. Plus, P.'s friend we stayed with in Eugene last month is a MASSIVE Cure fan, and the b-sides collection seeped into my pores while we were there.
