Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

"I don't know the meaning of the word 'surrender'. I mean, I know it, I'm not dumb... just not in this context." - "The Tick"

While I was looking up which songs were on "Good News for People Who Like Bad News," I noticed that Amazon has two free downloads up for grabs. I can't recommend the greatness of every song they've done but if I'm in a "I don't know who I am but I want to forget to think about it for a while" kind of mood, these are the guys I turn to :)

The generation that could change the world is still looking for its car keys.

Anybody know Modest Mouse? I heard some of their stuff this weekend and liked it, I think. Thoughts?

Here's my feeling: I'd kind of thought of them as a band liked by people who thought that Indie automatically equalled Good. And then I listened to them. I've only heard Good News, but, damn. It's really really good.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I'm not too in love with these two songs on the first listen, but I heard their latest single yesterday (off the heralded Good News), and it's not bad. I like it more than these two free ones.

Heh. Yeah. For some reason I thought they were an older band, and this was some sort of comeback for them. Am I thinking of a similarly named band? Was there a band called Danger Mouse? Was there Modest Something Else?

Yes, there was. Also, they've been around for a decade or more, but they've never really done anything before now.

Exactly! It's weird when that happens. It stuns me.

Oh, dude, I totally thought you knew of them. In fact, I thought I'd heard of them *from* you. Huh.

Well, I'd heard of them cause I keep my ear to the underground, but I hadn't heard anything by them until the video last night, and those two songs. You might have heard of them from Dan. He blind-bought the new CD and loved it.

S to the A -- using they/them pronouns!

Anyone listen to Nellie McKay? I just picked up her major album release.

I have a friend who really loves her. She quotes her all the time. I haven't heard anything by her, though. (Have you gotten to hear Snow Patrol yet? If you haven't, get on IM and I'll send you some.)

with a gleam in my eye, and an almost airtight alibi

Sasha Frere-Jones gives her a pretty good review in the latest New Yorker. It's online -- check it out.
