My radio station loves me. They played me the only Phish song I know I like "Wasted", Richard Thompson's "I feel so good" and just now Bowie's "Life on Mars".

So I finally finished moving (only took a freaking month) and I may actually burn meara's and Anne W.'s CDs tomorrow and send them on to Jon later this week. Stranger things have happened, after all.

Currently listening to: The Nields (went to their show on Saturday night--a very good show, though I'm perhaps a teensy bit biased, but I just love them so much that seeing them always feels like coming home), and Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (saw this in Boston last week and have been humming "Brussels" ever since).

My portable CD player leapt to it's death last week. So I'm wondering if I should replace it with another CD player or get an MP3 player. Can anyone pimp the MP3 player to me? What are the benefits? Drawbacks?

Well, it kind of depends on what you use it for and what kind you're looking at.

Pros: No skipping.
More music (significantly more, if you're looking into the 6gb or larger ones)
Less bulky (especially if you're looking at 128mb ones, which are just about perfect for jogging and the like)

Cons: You have to be at your computer to put new stuff on - not a big deal if you get the big ones, could be a big deal with the small ones.
Sound quality varies depending on the bitrate of the tracks.
Price.

This is assuming you mean the MP3 players, not the MP3/CD player combos. There's no negatives to the combos that I've found, outside of price, since you're just adding functionality to a CD player.

I honestly can't think of any new southern rock bands...though undoubtedly they exist.

I've been using my iTunes as a magic 8 ball for the last hour - hitting shuffle and trying to interpret whether the song is telling me I should quit my job now or wait to see if I survive the layoffs that are coming this Friday (If I quit now I may save someone else from getting laid off). It's not giving me a clear answer. Stoopid hard-to-interpret lyrics.

Do you mean Southern Rock like the genre of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Allman Brothers and Molly Hatchet or just bands from down south? Because as a genre, all that's basically been absorbed into new country. For just southernness...I don't know. Maybe Neutral Milk Hotel still counts though Jeff Mangum could be anywhere, though they're mostly out of Ruston, LA, and have been sort of based out of Athens for a while.

As someone who's been laid off twice, I'd say wait until the layoffs because you might get a big severance package that you could use on time off or buying music.
