What? No country music? The music of pain?
Buffista Music II: Wrath of Chaka Khan
There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.
Speaking of Norah Jones, anyone else see her on SNL this weekend? She sounded great, and looked fabulous -- I think she's put on weight over the last year or so?
Alicia - The Sigur Ros and Nick Drake combo post break up is a dangerous mix of sad-inducing. At least that was my experience.
I was all Irish and stuff this weekend - got the Thrills (I like it as background spring/summer music - it was perfect on the stereo for getting my balcony ready for spring plants and flowers - but not so impressive on the headphones.) And I got Astral Weeks because Hec always puts it in his top ten lists. Talk about perfect Sunday music.
Also got the Leona Naess self-titled, a new copy of Roman Candle (Elliott Smith) to replace my scratched copy.
My favorite break up song is "No Children" by the Mountain Goats. And a bunch of bitter and angsty Pearl Jam songs.
Off to lunch.
After working on the book for the last several weeks I've been scouting out all the music we advocate that I've never heard.
And still not finding a lot of it...Though I do think I will be picking up Dogbowl's Flan. Still looking for The Leopards (a band who apparently modeled themselves exactly as a mid period Kinks band), Potatomen (jangle pop on Lookout), Nourallah Brothers, Fugu, Lipstick Killers, Orgone Box, Sex Clark 5, Appaloosa, Mark Radice, Exuma, Pamelo Mounk'a, Michael Mantler and The Wylde Mammoths.
tina, I heard the new Sufjan Stevens at Mod Lang this weekend. It sounded loverly, so I bought the previous Michigan one.
Also got a collection titled As We Travel - folk funk flavours and ambient soul. All late sixties early seventies stuff like Shuggie Otis. Sort of dreamy psych funk soul. Some of it's better than others, but I did find some great tracks, like The Meters cover of Neil Young's "Birds."
OK, I'm definitely going to see Wilco when they're here, because NELS F**KIN' CLINE JUST JOINED THE BAND!
I have to say that I don't like Norah Jones' new look. Well, her new hair, anyway. Normally I find her just lovely, but the bangs? Personally, I thought she looked kind of awful on SNL.
Is that the Australian Lipstick Killers, Hec?
Hayden - I just dropped off Kate P.'s and Alicia K.'s CD mixes at the post office. Finally.
Woo hoo!
Personally, I thought she looked kind of awful on SNL.
I liked the bangs. Not so much the sweater.
Is that the Australian Lipstick Killers, Hec?
Yep. Kim's the Aus-rock expert. Btw, I know you mentioned it, but did you send in your release form? I think you did. Btw, as a contributor you'll get a free book, but feel free to buy a few for your friends anyway.
