Firefly Spoilers
Discussion of all Firefly episodes, including "Trash", "The Message", "Heart of Gold", and any movie news.
I enjoyed the movie overall, and I'm definitely excited to see the finished product, but I do agree with Kalshane on this:
While I hate to lose Wash and Book, and it hurts, my main gripe continues to be the presentation. We're not given a chance to breathe. Wash's death is sudden and random and immediately on the heels of Serenity getting seriously shredded (and props to Joss and Tim for this even hurting. My reactions to the various versions of the Enterprise blowing up have always been more "Woah" than "Ow".) then we spend the next 20 minutes getting punched in the gut again and again without a chance to take it all in. Apparently this worked for some people. For me it just caused an emotional disconnect and pulled me out of the story.
Although Tim had nothing to do with the movie, correct?
Heh. Mr. H is quite adorable.
You have no idea. He's like a little kid trapped in a huge grizzly bear.
I already knew the death was coming, so I don't really have a pure reaction to it. I know I was dreading it, and knowing when it was coming made me squirm, but actually, I kinda needed the next action/scary stuff. It also did make it seem that none of them might make it. In fact, even being spoiled I kept thinking that maybe others did die and I just forgot. Mr. H said (and I'm not sure I agree- just giving the opinion of someone who, until now, wasn't really invested in any of the characters) he didn't think the story would have worked as well without the death.
Everyone remembers that Summer Glau was the ballerina in the Angel ballet show, right? Stands to reason she can kick ass.
BTW, Shohreh Agdashloo's cameo in "Serenity" -- where was it?
Joss loves Summer's feet, and so do I. They're so flexible.
Can I just say--the longest case of TV blueballs ever finally alleviated. And I mean before they even had the sex. One or two of my friends said they would've preferred if Simon had died. "No," I said. "I need him. I need Simon and Kaylee more than can possibly be healthy for me."
This has probably been mentioned, but ever notice how Joss likes to fill gaps as soon as he creates them? Wash's death means (among other things) a romance gap, as there's no couple anymore. The tension between Mal and Inara would be inappropriate to try to resolve in such short order, so into the breach go Kaylee and Simon.
And River watches. It can't count as a squick if you laugh, right?
I wasn't very convinced by the Simon/Kaylee love scenes; I thought that was the weakest part of the plot.
Who's talking about convinced? I just needed it to happen.
...way more than can be healthy for me.
And River watches. It can't count as a squick if you laugh, right?
I dunno - it squicked me and made me laugh at the same time.
She did get up to the bridge pretty quickly, though.
I did not have the problem Betsy had with the Simon/Kaylee thing. I thought it was cute, but undercut by Kaylee's matter-of-factness just enough not to be too schmoopy. However, that said, I don't know if I'd buy it if I hadn't seen the run of the series.
