In the pilot he did do an efficient smackdown.
BTW, the scene with Mal decking the doctor in the cargo thinking he is the one that lured the cruiser out to them to where Mal is telling Inara not to tell him what to do after the character was shot was the preview I saw at San Diego Comic Con...
