I'd be interested to see if non-fans fall for Wash -- I think he was played pretty well in the movie.
At the screening I saw on Monday, the crowd definitely fell for Wash. I was worried that people weren't getting into it emotionally until that point. When Wash started to repeat "I am a leaf on the wind..." everyone began laughing and that made the death more dramatic because those laughs abruptly stopped and turned into gasps. Further confirmation that the audience was invested in everyone's fate came when Simon was shot and there were more audible reactions. At that point, I knew the audience was really living with these characters.
Or possibly expressing a sentiment of "Not the face!" in the latter instance...
I didn't hate it, but I was disappointed. It was so, so different from the show that for a lot of it I was just re-missing the show. I think I'll enjoy it more the more I watch it.
You know, if you look at Wash's death as a plot device to get Zoe into that dress, I don't see how it wasn't worth it.

Excellent point. That dress. GT in that dress.
I hope she kept it. It's fucking incredible on her.
If I had a dress that made me look that good, I'd have a dozen made up, but still never take off the original.
When I picked up my comics today, cute comic-book guy showed me the Serenity RPG book. (Or *a* book; there may be more than one, I dunno.)
I told him that I was less of a Firefly fan than many Whedon fans are, but that I did see the sneak preview of the movie. Comic-book guy said "My only problem with the movie was that, okay, Reavers: savage, basically mindless killing/raping/destroying creatures. So how is it that they still have the brain capacity to be so good at piloting and navigating spaceships?"
Heh. Made *me* laugh.
There's precedent. Consider the Chelsea fan navigating the Underground to get to the soccer game. Add futuristic drugs, and lo! Reaver.
Penelope von Whistleblower? Nice.
ETA: Ok, just to be sure: is that you, Allyson?
