No, they didn't explain how Dr. Swann got the key. I think he must have had some kind of device surreptitiously set up in the cave to capture it if it was used again, but there is no evidence for that.

Did anybody else wince when Chloe asked Lionel for the truth about him murdering his parents? I thought it was a really dumb thing to do, and it was capped off by the "I've saved the answer on my voice mail, so it's ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY SAFE with no possibility that the powerful head of an evil conglomerate can get to it and erase it, no sir".

I mean, Clark is usually the dumbest person on the show, right? What happened here?

Well, she was also confused as to why no one wanted to talk to her (or trust her with sensitive information) and she thinks truth is a complete defense to anything she does.
