Thrive to spite them

I hate to say this but I really kind of liked some of the new BG. Not all of it, but it wasn't hideous.

Although I kept watching it and seeing influences from other tv shows and movies.

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

I liked BG quite a bit. So far it's a lot better than the original, at least from a science and technology standpoint. I liked Adama and the XO, too. OTOH, both Apollo and Starbuck appear to be jerks. And Baltar reminds me of the whiny guy on Earth 2.

I'm not keeping their names straight very well, but I was highly distracted trying to ignore one side of a phone call during the middle part.

Is Baltar the scientist that fucked everything up? Personally I liked the guy--Helio (?) that stayed on the planet. Which he so shouldn't have done. And I got distracted by Mary McDonnell, to me she always sounds like she's on the verge of some kind of emotional breakdown. Even when she's calm and in control.

I liked BG, too. Really dug the thump thump thump thump-thump-thump background beat in place of soaring orchestrals in some places. Thought the glowy spine was hilarious for the imagined conversations it inspired in my brain ... the scene with the baby was really quite ... yech. Yeah, evil bad. Got it, thanks.

Enjoyed it. Will watch more.

About halfway through the first part right now. I'm very fascinated by the way they've incorporated a number of events that were part of the series (the Cylon war, Zach's death), but it's all different, too.

Also, like DX, I'm very much liking the science and tech. THere's also a significant element of realism--so far most of the shots that occur in outer space have had no or very little sound, which is a choice I've waited many long years for more filmmakers to make.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

My only comment so far is that it's evident that the slick super genius doesn't go in for doggy style.

Hee!

The first battle just happened. I like how the Vipers have reaction control thrusters. That's very cool.

And the little sound for the space shots continues to be very cool It's not completely silent, but they clearly tried to keep it as quiet as they thought they could get away with, and the sound levels jump noticably when we switch to an in-cockpit shot.

Okay, BG part one is over. I have to say that I'm really liking what I've seen. Nicely layered story, characters with subtle conflicts, very cool tech and science, all handled fairly well.

And topped off with very good acting and directing choices. The scene where the tech chief complained to Commander Adama that the XO didn't give him forty seconds to save his men really struck me. Any other director would have let his actors yell melodramatically at each other. Here they whispered. Great choice!

This was among my thoughts as well ... that, and it's a fun new twist in the how to test whether someone's an alien convention.
